At ECCE 2024, former CCE Masters Intern, Rafael Aranzabal Obieta, presented findings based on
“Making EVs and the grid work together: a San Diego based study,“
a paper co-authored by Señor Obieta, SDSU Professor Sridhar Seshagiri, PhD, and
CCE Exec. Dir., Jose Torre-Bueno, PhD. Obieta, who resides in Madrid, Spain,
traveled to the US for the conference and to reconnect with friends from SDSU.

Topic:
“Must Power for Transportation Electrification Come from Utilities?
The Potential of Locally-Owned Solar Powered Charging Stations”
The California Public Utility Commission assumes the only way to bring electricity to public charging stations is to pay the investor-owned utilities to add new capacity. We challenge that assumption. Our modeling shows that it is cost-effective for local property owners to build carport-mounted solar arrays over parking lots to power charging stations directly without adding utility capacity to a site. This also facilitates the goal of shifting charging to the daytime when cars are at work.
Further, V2H capable cars that charge during the day and carry energy home in the evening are a form of transmission. This energy can alleviate the need to upgrade local distribution lines to permit building electrification. The availability of EV V2H energy in the evening will substantially reduce the need for utility-scale batteries to provide power after sunset.
Key takeaways:
- Locally-owned solar powered charging stations are feasible.
- This allows building charging stations without adding utility infrastructure.
- Bidirectional cars charged during the day can carry charge home in the evening; reducing the requirement to upgrade distribution circuits to permit building electrification.
Taming the Duck Curve With V2G
September 11 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
This event is free, but attendees must register here.
A major problem with solar power is that the time of generation does not match up with time of use. This results in what is called the duck curve where there is an over abundance of power mid day and heavy power use in the evening. Batteries are used to store the day excess and give it back in the evening. This adds additional cost to effective use of solar systems.
But what if your vehicle’s battery could be used to bridge the supply/usage gap? You’ve already paid for the battery; all you need is the connection. Vehicle to Grid (V2G) does not need to be used just to supply emergency power during a blackout. V2G has the potential to help both home solar and the utility grid.
Hear Jose Torre-Bueno of the Center for Community Energy on how this could work and legislation moving forward so that all EVs will be V2G capable.

Virtual Power Plants
Bringing the “Home of The Future” to Life
Part of NCCCA’s Changing Climate Series
Virtual power plants (VPP) are an emerging and innovative tool to aid California’s clean energy transition. Join us to learn how virtual power plants work and how they can reduce a home’s carbon footprint while saving its residents money and making energy cleaner and more reliable for everyone. This exciting technology developed by MCE has been implemented in Richmond, CA, and serves as a blueprint for other communities. Key Speakers will be:
- Alexandra McGee, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at MCE
- Chris Sentiera, from Community Energy and EquityResources LLC (CEER LLC)
They will explain how virtual power plants will benefit all residents, including those who have borne the brunt of environmental impacts due to the industrialization of our society’s energy supply. They will also demonstrate how this technology will ensure grid reliability during extreme weather-related events while promoting equitable access to clean energy solutions. Read speaker bios HERE.
Please REGISTER HERE in advance for this meeting.
If you miss this event we will post it on the NCCCA Youtube channel.
